1837 Braided hair Large Cent - G-VG

$35.00

Description

The design used for the Obverse side of this 1 Cent coin was the second version. The original was designed by Robert Scot, and it received much criticism for making the goddess Liberty look like an elderly woman. The redesign in 1836, one year before this piece was minted, gave Liberty a younger appearance and had a better public opinion. The Large Cent featuring the Matron Head or Braided Head Obverse was produced from 1816 to 1857. They were replaced with the smaller Flying Eagle cent due to copper prices rising, a problem we are seeing today with the One Cent coin having production cease in 2026.
