Description

This Dollar coin was minted in 1979 at the Philadelphia Mint. This was also the first year of production for the Susan B. Anthony Dollars. They were the first coins in US history to feature a real woman in the design, being Susan B. Anthony. She was a human rights activist and played an important role in the Women's Suffrage movement. She was even handing out anti-slavery petitions by the time she was 17. She was born in 1820 and died in 1906. These coins were unpopular in the US due to their resemblance in size and shape to the Quarter. This caused people to get confused, coins were eaten up by vending machines, and eventually, production ended in 1981.
